CAIRNS, FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND, AUSTRAILIA

        The city of Cairns is situated on the northeast coast of the State of Queensland, 865 miles northwest of Brisbane.  An airline and shipping terminal, Cairns, with its excellent harbor, is the center of a large agricultural district and the terminus of a railroad system linking it with important mining areas.

        Industries include tourism, sugar mills, butter factories, meat canneries and railroad workshops.  Products of the region include sugar, corn, tobacco, peanuts, cattle, hogs, lumber, coal, tin and wolfram.

        At 17 degrees south latitude, it boasts a mild tropical climate and beautiful beaches that draw  visitors from Southern Australia during the winter.  The Great Barrier reef, a famous tourist attraction, lies a few miles offshore.

        The population of the area has  has grown from 21,021 in 1954 to 120,000 today.
